In the Gospel of John, the second person of the Godhead incarnated in Jesus Christ is the eternal Word; the expression of infinitely selfless love, the principle of divine will, creation, law, and order.
Thus right from the start, John declares in John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”.
Although the Greek phrase “in the beginning”, lacks the definite article, it is definite in its meaning, by not referring to some particular point in time.
Rather, it refers to eternity past, before any; and all other beginnings.
The Greek term Logos translated as “Word”; John uses in its technical sense only in his 1st chapter, to denote divine wisdom as the integrating force of the universe.
However he uses logos in strict reference to Christ; as creative, communicative, and selflessly loving expression, of divine mind and will.
As the Creator and Redeemer; “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth”. (1st Timothy 2:4).
Stating: “and the Word was God”; John denies that the Word was a God; one among many; or the God, as if He alone were God. Rather he presents Christ as God incarnate.
Most significantly, in John 1 verse 2; he declares: “The same was in the beginning with God”; implying the Word existed before, the beginning of all beginnings.
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made”. (John 1 verse 3).
Herewith John declared, that in eternity past when the entire universe was made; the Word was actively and intimately associated with the Father, in the origination and development of all things; according to divine will and wisdom.
(Also see 1st Corinthians 8:6; Colossians 1:16; and Hebrew 1:1 and 2).
Finally in John 1: verses 4 and 5; John completes introducing the eternal Word by stating: “In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not”.
Herewith John sets the stage, to display the raging conflict between the light and darkness; life and death; truth and lies; Christ and Satan the devil.
Johns Gospel of truth and wisdom, is most relevant today; as we seemingly live in darkness before dawn. Thus, coming blogs will address our daily tribulations caused by this raging conflict; and provide biblical light of life for our salvation and victory in Christ Jesus.
